***Call for OLA Annual Award Nominations
OLA’s Honors & Awards Committee seeks nominations for the following four awards. Nomination letters (with no more than six letters of support) will be due in 2010. Nominations are due Friday, February 19, 2010. These awards will be presented to recipients at the 2010 OLA Banquet & Annual Meeting on March 24 at Kell’s Irish Restaurant & Pub in Portland, Oregon.
Tell us about those talented, dedicated individuals whose commitment to excellent library service has made a difference. Nominate them for one of OLA’s special awards:
- OLA Distinguished Service Award
- Oregon Librarian of the Year
- Library Employee of the Year
- Library Supporter of the Year

1.Oregon Librarian of the Year may be awarded to any Oregon librarian who has been working in an Oregon Library for at least two years in a paid professional position. The nominee must demonstrate excellence in library service in his or her community and to Oregon libraries. The nominee must be a member of the association.
2.Oregon Library Employee of the Year may be awarded to any Oregon library staff member who has worked in an Oregon library for at least two years as a paid staff member and demonstrated excellence in library service in his or her community.
3.Oregon Library Supporter of the Year may be awarded to any volunteer, volunteer group, library Friend, board member, government official, or other individual who is not a paid library staff member and who has demonstrated excellence in supporting and promoting Oregon libraries.
4.Oregon Library Association Distinguished Service Award may be awarded to any Oregon librarian or library staff member, who has been in the profession for 15 or more years, has worked in Oregon libraries for at least ten years, and is currently a member of OLA, for exceptional service over a period of years.
Your letter of nomination should include the following information, if pertinent, and be as informational as possible:
- Provide nominee’s current position
- Past positions held and summary of major accomplishments
- OLA activities: committee appointments, etc.
- Brief description of other noteworthy accomplishments
- Your name and how you can be reached if the committee has questions

***2010 PLD OLÉ Award
It’s your last chance to nominate someone for PLD’s OLÉ Award!
Do you know a fellow public library employee who has demonstrated exceptional effort and excellence in public library service this past year? Do you know someone who took the bull by the horns and got the job done? Do you know someone who has made significant achievements with little formal recognition?
Please help us recognize this person with the OLÉ award. Please provide a brief bio of the nominee with their significant and concrete achievements over the past year. Nominations will be reviewed by the PLD board and the award will be presented at the OLA annual meeting and banquet on March 24, 2010. We can provide a small stipend to help defray the recipient’s cost of attending the banquet.

*** Call for Nominations for the 2010 OYEA! Award
OYAN is looking to honor exceptional work done in the field of teen/young adult services in the state of Oregon. Nominations are now being accepted for an individual, library, organization, program, or initiative that has made a positive and significant contribution to teens in Oregon libraries.
A complete nomination will include nominee’s name and contact information, and a thorough description of the nominee’s contribution to teen services. We encourage the inclusion of any supporting letters that may be appropriate, especially from teens themselves.
All nominations should be sent to Kristin Starnes, OYAN’s Award Committee Chairperson, via email or post. Please also include the nominator’s contact information in case of questions. Nominations must be received by Monday, March 8, 2010.

OYAN will announce the OYEA! Award winner at the OLA Annual Meeting & Banquet held on Wednesday March 24, 6pm at Kell’s Irish Restaurant in Portland. OYAN will also host an OYEA! Award reception at the Spring OYAN membership meeting at the Seaside Public Library on April 23, 2010. The winning individual, library, or organization will receive a $100 honorarium, an award plaque, and an optional scholarship if financial assistance is needed to attend the award reception.

***OLA MLIS Scholarship Applications due March 1
The Oregon Library Association offers financial assistance for eligible Oregon residents enrolled or planning to enroll in ALA-accredited masters’ degree programs in library and information science. The deadline for submitting applications for the 2010- 2011 academic year is March 1, 2010. To apply, go to the scholarships catalog of the Oregon Student Assistance Commission at www.getcollegefunds.org and find OLA’s scholarship program by searching for program 471.
If you miss this year’s deadline, be sure to check the OSAC scholarship catalog next October, when OLA’s scholarship applilcation process re-opens. Scholarship awards decisions are made annually in June.
The Oregon library Association’s MLIS Scholarship Program is supported in whole or part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library, and through the generosity of OLA members who have donated to the scholarship fund. OLA members are encouraged to make donations to support this OLA initiative by using the MLIS Scholarship Contribution Form at www.olaweb.org in the Membership section.
***SSD Executive Board Videoconference Meeting
The OLA Support Staff Division will meet Friday, February 19 from 11:00 to 2:00. This will be a videoconference meeting held in Willamette Seminar Room East at the Valley Library on the OSU campus in Corvallis, and in Education 24 on the Hatfield Marine Science Center campus in Newport. Interested SSD members are invited to drop in at either meeting place. If you’ve ever been curious about what SSD does behind the scene, please check us out. Noon-hour drop-ins are particularly welcome.
***Children’s Services Division Spring Workshop
Just a reminder, please sign up soon for the CSD Spring Workshop! Deadline to register is February 24th.
The Children’s Services Division 2010 Spring Workshop will be held on Friday, March 5th from 10:00 am-4:00 pm at the Albany Public Library. This year’s morning sessions will be presented by celebrated author Virginia Euwer Wolff and co-presenter Jim Tindall. They will be exploring the topics of “How to host an author or illustrator at your library” and “How to present a reader’s theater” based on Virginia’s book, “Bat 6”, one of the Oregon Reads books of 2009.
This is also your chance to share your creative ideas for programs, activities, crafts, and more – inspired by this year’s “Make a Splash-Read” and “Make Waves at your library” summer reading themes.
At lunchtime, we will be presenting the Evelyn Sibley Lampman Award to a “librarian, author, or educator who has made a significant contribution in the areas of literature and/or library service for the benefit of the children of Oregon”.

***OLA Guidelines on Identify Theft
No, these are not a how-to to steal identities, but rather OLA’s guidelines for protecting the personal data you collect, use and store at your library. These complement ones on patron privacy that have been well covered by ALA. However, we found little information available for libraries needing to comply with federal and state mandates stating that libraries have reasonable safeguards to ensure the safety of personal information. Many libraries will be included in the plans developed by their city, university or county. Others such as independent library districts need to address the issue independently. Even if covered by a larger entity, libraries have some unique issues and concerns with personal information. Consequently, the OLA Development and Legislation Committee compiled guidelines that are available on the Committee’s web site – http://www.olaweb.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=100902.

***Feed Yourself with the ACRL Oregon Blog
The ACRL Oregon/OLA Academic Division encourages anyone interested in Oregon academic libraries to add our blog to your feed readers. Launched last November, it is gathering steam and our hope is that it will grow into a dynamic venue for members to share, learn, and communicate.
The blog is located at http://acrloregon.org and the ACRL Oregon President has just posted a brief report from the Chapters Council meeting at ALA Midwinter. We’ve also added the Northwest Central feed for academic events and resources to the right-hand column, so you can conveniently discover them while visiting the blog.
The blog posters are liaisons from academic libraries around the state, but anyone can comment on posts. We are still looking for liaisons to some institutions. Contact Diane Sotak (sotak@up.edu) if you are interested in being a liaison and providing news from your library (new hires, retirements, publications, programs, or any ideas or questions to pose to blog readers).
