As part of the Horner Exchange Project, three Oregon librarians are currently traveling to Fujian Province, China, for a three week visit to libraries and cultural centers. They will be learning about the state of librarianship in public and university libraries as well as giving presentations in their areas of expertise.
If you would like to follow their adventures, Amy Lee (Fort Vancouver Regional Library District), Brandon Barnett (Multnomah County Library) and Nancy Hoover (Marylhurst University) will be blogging about their experiences at http://horner2010.wordpress.com/ beginning on Monday, October 18.
Oregon State Librarian Jim Scheppke is also travelling with the Horner delegates for part of their trip to Fujian Province.
The Horner Library Staff Exchange Project is an exchange of library staff between Fujian Province, China, and Oregon, for the purpose of sharing professional knowledge about library and information science. It was established through a generous gift from the late Dr. Layton Horner to the Oregon State Library, and continues through a partnership between the Oregon State Library and OLA’s International Relations Round Table. Our international partners are the Fujian Provincial Library and the Fujian Library Association. Fujian is Oregon’s sister province in China and the Fujian Provincial Library maintains a sister library relationship with the Oregon State Library.

“If we knew today what we’ll know tomorrow: Futures thinking for academic libraries”
2010 ACRL Oregon & Washington Joint Fall Conference – October 28-29
As ACRL Oregon celebrates its 35th anniversary, we’ll take the opportunity to look into the future instead of examining the past. What hopes, expectations, and fears do we have for academic libraries in general and in the region going into the future? What questions can we ask now that will help us grow into the futures we hope for and avoid the futures we fear? How can we discuss possible futures in a way that enriches our current practices? How do those daily practices create the future? Gather with your colleagues in a beautiful setting and take a break from the present to gaze into our future.
- Opening keynote speaker: David Silver
David Silver is an associate professor of media studies at the University of San Francisco where he teaches courses on media history, digital media, and green media. From 1996-2009, Silver directed the Resource Center for Cyberculture Studies, an entirely online center devoted to the academic study of the internet. Since 2004, Silver has co-directed (with Sarah Washburn) The September Project, a grassroots effort to encourage events about freedom in all libraries in all countries throughout the month of September. - Closing keynote speaker: Elizabeth Dupuis
Elizabeth Dupuis is the Associate University Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley focused on advancing the library’s engagement in teaching and learning arenas, and Director of the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, primary libraries for humanities, social sciences, area studies, and undergraduate studies. Over the past 17 years Dupuis has held a variety of positions at UC Berkeley and UT Austin, including project leader for the award-winning educational site TILT, and project director for the Mellon Library/Faculty Fellowship for Undergraduate Research, a campus-wide initiative involving administrators, faculty, librarians, educational technologists and other pedagogical experts. - Invited Speakers:
- Jamene Brooks-Kieffer is Assistant Professor and Resource Linking Librarian at Kansas State University Libraries where she administers SFX, EZproxy, LibX, and portions of the Libraries’ web site. She blogs about her work with SFX on the K-State Libraries SFX Documentation blog, http://ksulib.typepad.com/sfxdoc.
- Cynthia Fugate is Associate Dean for Research and Instructional Services at the University of Washington Libraries. Her responsibilities include public service operations and support for research, teaching and learning at a dozen libraries on the Seattle campus and at the Friday Harbor Labs in the San Juan Islands.
- Victoria Hanawalt is the Norman F. Carrigg College Librarian at Reed College, where she has directed the library since 1987. She has served on numerous ALA and ACRL national committees and has been active in OCLC governance as an elected delegate and president of Users Council and an elected member of the OCLC Board of Trustees. Currently she is serving a second term as a member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance Board.
- Faye A. Chadwell was appointed the Interim University Librarian at Oregon State University in October 2010. Prior to this appointment she was OSU’s Associate University Librarian for Collections and Content Management, a position she’d held since August 2007.
- Lightning talks: An excellent roster of lightning talks will be presented.
