OLA/OASL Proposed Merger – Fourth in a Series of Four Merger Benefits: Wider People Power Pool!
The election considering the merger of the Oregon Association of School Libraries into OLA as a division will be held at the business meeting (Thursday, April 26, 2012 lunch) at the OLA Annual Conference in Bend. The OASL membership has already approved merging at their October conference. April will be OLA’s chance to vote. The ballot resolution will be communicated in advance to OLA members. In the Hotlines preceding the OLA election merger benefits will be featured. The full proposal about the merger can be found on the OLA home page at www.olaweb.org. If you have questions contact OLA Board members or members of the OLA-OASL Joint Committee on School-Public Library Cooperation (contact information on the website.)
Multi-type library staff membership on committees like Oregon Authors, Intellectual Freedom, and Library Development and Legislation committees will expand the pool of knowledgeable staff planning these activities. Cross-library staff work on reading awards like the Oregon Readers Choice Award, the Beverly Cleary Readers Choice Award, and programs like the Oregon Battle of the Books and library summer reading programs (traditions already begun) will be invigorated. OLA will initiate presidential rotation opportunities seeking candidates from the school library arena as now done from public and academic/special library arenas. An OASL Division representative with Board voting privileges comes with the merger and OASL members will be recruited for other elected and appointed offices expanding leadership opportunities for individuals and for the organization.

- Cleanup that will be necessary if the OASL/OLA merger is approved.

- A few other minor wording changes for consistency.

Options for Statewide Collaborative Borrowing
The OLA Resource Sharing Committee is hosting a conference session Friday, April 27th from 8:30am to 10am to discuss recommendations for a voluntary, patron-initiated borrowing program between libraries. The goal of the program is to create a process through which Oregon libraries can establish reciprocal agreements with other libraries to allow free, direct borrowing by their patrons. In 2011, the OLA Board charged the Resource Sharing Committee to investigate options for establishing collaborative borrowing between libraries.
A draft proposal will be presented at the conference session and OLA members are encouraged to attend in order to help the Resource Sharing Committee shape the program so that it works for the majority of libraries and their patrons. While Oregon may not have a statewide library card, how close can we come to achieving statewide access? The Resource Sharing Committee will propose a program to the OLA Board for implementation in 2013.

OLA/OASL Proposed Merger – Third in a Series of Four Merger Benefits: Serving Our Common Client/User/Patrons!
Promoting reading and providing information literacy instruction is not simply a K-12 pursuit. Early childhood literacy, public library student support, college and university instruction, and lifelong adult learning are integrally tied to K-12 education and school library services. The intersection of common clients and libraries points to the need for all library staff to work collaboratively in order to effectively serve the needs of all. Merging OASL as a division into an organization that already includes public and academic divisions refreshes the possibilities for cross-library input into service issues. One example: information literacy guidelines for students from pre-kindergarten through their college years and beyond (development efforts well underway) can be enhanced through collaborative skills development.
