OLA Special Election

Following the recent resignation of Robert Hulshof-Schmidt from the office of OLA President the Association Executive Board took the following action under the leadership of new president, Abigail Elder.  In order to have a new president by this September the board directed that a special election be held immediately to fill the Vice-president / President-elect office.  The Nominating Committee was charged with finding two candidates to stand for election to the now vacant position, formerly held by Elder. In accordance with OLA bylaws this election will be held in February and March with the ballot being sent to the membership electronically.  The successful candidate will serve as Vice-president/President-elect for the remainder of this year and will be OLA President during the 2012-13 membership year.

The Association was very fortunate to have two individuals step forward without hesitation when they were asked to run; Michele Burke, Reference Librarian at Chemeketa Community College and Garrett Trott, Reference/Instruction Librarian at Corban University.  In keeping with our recent past practice of alternating presidential candidates from the public library and academic/special library spheres we will have two academic librarians on this ballot since the sitting president is from the public library sector.

This “special” election is to address the immediate vacancy caused by a resignation and does not eliminate the need to hold the regular election of officers following the spring conference in Bend.  The OLA membership is asked to be watching for the ballot that will be appearing soon in an e-mail via Memberclicks.

To Merge or Not to Merge?
As the Annual OLA Conference nears, the Hotline will publish a series of articles examining the proposed Oregon Library Association/Oregon Association of School Libraries merger.  The first installment comes to us from  OASL Past-President Ruth Murray, the second from OLA Past-President and member of the OLA-OASL Joint Committee on School-Public Library Cooperation Mary Ginnane.

About two and a half years  ago, a group of librarians representing OASL and OLA started meeting. At that time the discussion included talk of a possible merger between our two organizations. Those talks led to a proposal of such a merger, a proposal we put before our OASL membership at our 2010 Fall Conference.  At our  all-membership business meeting at the 2011 Fall Conference an overwhelming 95% of our voting members voted to become a division of OLA. We are thrilled to gain the vote of confidence from our membership and are hoping you will consider voting in favor or allowing us to join you.

Why would you want us? Because we believe that combining all of the library associations in Oregon can only make us stronger. It will give us a louder voice. A merger will allow us to work more closely on the goals we both hold dear.

Significant Reasons for an OLA-OASL Merger:  (From the Merger Proposal)

  • To create an organization that promotes information literacy and reading motivation for all Oregonians, from birth through adulthood.
  • Cost-sharing of association management and organization infrastructure (i.e., bookkeeping, web and membership management, lobbying activities, etc.)
  • Seamless advocacy, coordinating all library efforts and maximizing our strength in numbers
  •  Joint membership on committees like Oregon Authors, Intellectual Freedom, and Legislative committees, expanding the pool of knowledgeable staff contributing
  • Joint support of reading awards like the Oregon Readers Choice Award, the Beverly Cleary Readers Choice Award, and programs like the Oregon Battle of the Books and The Oregon Summer Reading Program
  • Cross-library input into information literacy guidelines and standards for students from pre-kindergarten through their college years and beyond, enhancing opportunities for collaborative skills development
  • Shared experiential knowledge between types of libraries such as managing volunteer programs, teaching information skills, and managing collections
  • A global perspective about all types of libraries and the continuum of service fostering a richer library experience for all stakeholders
  • Future collaborative projects between divisions

We Heart School….

The OLA election to accept or reject the merger of the Oregon Association of School Libraries into OLA will be held at the business meeting (Thursday, April 26, 2012 lunch) at the Annual Conference in Bend. Taking place at a conference with the theme of Oregon Libraries: Right at the Heart of Things this vote offers OLA members the chance to put their hearts on their sleeve and embrace a new division in the organization. Divisions have successfully been integrated into OLA’s structure before — there is every reason to believe that merging OASL should be just as successful and beneficial
to all. The OASL membership has already approved merging at their October conference. April will be OLA’s chance to vote. The ballot resolution will be communicated in advance to OLA members. Upcoming Hotlines will remind members of the vote and feature the benefits.    Mary Ginnane, Past-president, and the OLA-OASL Joint Committee on School-Public Library Cooperation.

Register Now for the 2012 OLA Conference
Take advantage of early registration rates now through March 16th for the 2012 Oregon Library Association Conference.  The 2012 OLA Conference will be April 25-27 at the Riverhouse Convention Center in Bend, Oregon.

Robert Killen, Executive Director of the City Club of Central Oregon will be the keynote speaker. Robert Killen will be speaking on –Building Dialogue in the Age of Demons.
Stephen Abram, Author and Information Futures will be the banquet speaker.  He will be speaking on –Light ‘Em up!  The Future of Libraries.

Honors and Awards Nominations Sought
It’s time to honor your library colleagues!

Yes, it is time to think about who has done an outstanding job or taken on a project or been responsible for a success in our libraries this year!    Tell us about those talented, dedicated individuals whose commitment to excellent library service has made a difference.   The OLA Honors & Awards Committee want to know who those individuals (or groups) are and we want you to tell us!

Nominations are open for the following awards:

  • Oregon Librarian of the Year
  • Library Employee of the Year
  • OLA Distinguished Service Award
  • Library Supporter of the Year

Nomination letters (with no more than six letters of support) are due Friday, March 23, 2010.

These awards will be presented to recipients at the 2012 OLA Annual Conference Luncheon Banquet in Bend on Friday, April 27, 2012.

Here are the details on each award:

1. Oregon Librarian of the Year may be awarded to any Oregon librarian who has been working in an Oregon Library for at least two years in a paid professional position.  The nominee must demonstrate excellence in library service in his or her community and to Oregon libraries.  The nominee must be a member of OLA.

2. Oregon Library Employee of the Year may be awarded to any Oregon library staff member who has worked in an Oregon library for at least two years as a paid staff member and demonstrated excellence in library service in his or her community.

3. Oregon Library Association Distinguished Service Award may be awarded to any Oregon librarian or library staff member, who has been in the profession for 15 or more years, has worked in Oregon libraries for at least ten years, and is currently a member of OLA, for exceptional service over a period of years.

4. Oregon Library Supporter of the Year may be awarded to any volunteer, volunteer group, library Friend, board member, government official, or other individual who is not a paid library staff member and who has demonstrated excellence in supporting and promoting Oregon libraries.

OYEA!
“The what?”, you ask?

The answer: The 2012 OYAN You’re Excellent Award!.  If you know someone that has made a difference for teens, we want to hear about it.  The OYEA! may be awarded to an individual, library, organization, program, or initiative that has made a positive and significant contribution to teens in libraries in the state of Oregon.  The honoree will receive an engraved plaque and a $100 donation to the teen service program of their choice.  If needed, funds are available to ensure that the honoree attends the 2012 OLA Annual Conference to receive the acknowledgement of their peers.

Nominations for this coveted award are open until March 31st.  Please include the following:

Description of the nominee’s positive and significant contributions to teens in libraries in the State Of Oregon

The Oregon Legislature is in Session
Funding for this year’s Ready to Read grants is still up in the air as we wait for the Legislature to decide on the level of cuts to the State Library.  The checks that went out in December were $.86 per child.  This might go down to $.69 if the proposed 3.5% cut goes into effect for the State Library.  We are hoping for the best.  So, this a great time to remind your legislators of what you do with that money!  There’s a new briefing paper on the OLA Legislative Committee’s website and the Ready to Read Grant Program annual report on the State Library’s .

The Work Group of Libraries and Archives has completed its work and sent the required report to the Legislature.  This is on the OLA Legislative Committee’s web page.  A hearing is rumored for Thursday February 16.

February 15, 2012 (Vol. 18, No. 4) – Happenings

Interviews for Oregon State Librarian Scheduled
February 23 is the date for the next round of interviews for the Oregon State Librarian.  Public presentations by the candidates will be in the morning.  These will be taped and available for immediate viewing.  If possible, we will have them streamed live.  However, Salem is a bit crowded right now with the Legislative Session.  Feedback will be welcome.  Stay tuned for more information.

Countdown to 2012 ORCA Vote
Voting for this year’s Oregon Readers Choice Awards (ORCA) is March 1-31.  This means that your young readers have until then to qualify as voters. They do this by reading (or having read to them) at least two books from any of the lists posted here.  During the month of March, there will be a ‘Submit Votes Here’ button on that site for teachers and librarians.

Thanks to Deb Alvarez and the wonderful Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) committee, there are several titles that appear on both 2012 lists making many students already eligible to vote for the ORCA.

February 15, 2012 (Vol. 18, No. 4) – Opportunities for Engagement

Oregon Information Literacy Summit
The Oregon Information Literacy Summit gathers together academic professionals who teach information literacy to undergraduates, from Dual Credit high school teachers to two- and four-year college instructors, particularly librarians and faculty teaching in writing-intensive disciplines.  This year’s Summit takes place Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. at Chemeketa Communty College’s Yamhill Valley Campus in McMinnville.

With talks, panels, and presentations, the IL Summit offers Oregon educators a unique face-to-face opportunity to participate in an ongoing discussion about the importance of and techniques for embedded information literacy instruction within every discipline.

As the date approaches, registration details and a Call for Proposals will be circulated and posted to the Oregon IL Summit page of the ILAGO blog.

Scholarships Available for 2012 International Conference of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums
Thursday, March 1 at 5 p.m. CST is the receipt deadline for scholarships to the June 4-7, 2012 International Conference of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Qualified applicants must work with a tribal archive, library, museum or cultural center, or be enrolled full-time in a museum, library, archival, or Native Studies related program. Awards are primarily based upon the extent to which an applicant is likely to benefit from the conference and financial need. Scholarships range from $250 to $750 and may include registration fees and three-nights shared lodging. Travel typically is not covered, but will be considered Funding for scholarships is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Approximately 100 scholarships will be awarded. February 1, 2012 (Vol. 18, No. 3) – From the President

OLA President Abigail Elder

I’m pleased to be serving as your new OLA President, serving an abbreviated term after the resignation of Robert Hulshof-Schmidt.  I’ve had the pleasure of working in Oregon libraries for 14 years, and the Oregon Library Association has been a central part of my professional happiness. I’m honored to serve an organization comprised of so many smart and generous members.

The theme of the 2012 OLA conference, “Oregon Libraries: Right at the Heart of Things”, honors both the physical and philosophical place that libraries hold in our communities.  Libraries, with our dedicated staff and volunteers, are not on the sidelines passively watching communities evolve. Instead, we are active participants in creating the change we want to see— identifying community needs, rallying partners, and implementing initiatives to better serve our patrons and potential patrons.

OLA is in the middle of a busy year. Some of our current projects include:

  • Proposal to merge with the Oregon Association of School Librarians
  • Software for attending meetings remotely
  • New OLA Logo
  • 2012 Conference in Bend, Oregon
  • 2013 Conference in Vancouver, Washington
  • Shared Borrowing Across the State
  • Working with Partner Organizations outside OLA

We are a vibrant, energetic organization. I encourage you to get involved in our many roundtables, committees, and divisions and see for yourself! Please contact me, or any OLA board member, to talk about how you can lend your talents and skills to our efforts.

2012 OLA Conference – Early Registration Begins February 6
Early registration begins February 6, 2012 for the 2012 Oregon Library Association Conference.  The 2012 OLA Conference will be April 25-27 at the Riverhouse Convention Center in Bend, Oregon.

Robert Killen, Executive Director of the City Club of Central Oregon will be the keynote speaker. Killen will be speaking on Building Dialogue in the Age of Demons. Stephen Abram, Author and Information Futurist, will be the banquet speaker.  Abram’s presentation is entitled Light ‘Em up!  The Future of Libraries. OLA Conference Showcase Proposals Sought

Does your library or library system have a new program, an ingenious solution to a problem, or a successful grant-funded or other project you wish to share through a demonstration, poster session or display at the Oregon Library Association Conference in Bend, OR, April 26-27, 2012? The Showcase format allows for flexibility and creativity in how your exhibit is presented or staffed. Deadline for Lampman Award Nominees Extended
If you’ve been thinking about nominating someone amazing for the Evelyn Sibley Lampman award, now is the time! The due date has been extended to February 3rd, so there is still plenty of time to send that email.

If you know a creative coworker, special author or energetic community partner deserving of this award, nominate them! If this Oregonian has benefited Oregon’s children with exemplary library services, great literature or amazing programs, put them in the running for state wide recognition!

Nominations are easy: just email me the pertinent info, and viola, they’re nominated. Then look forward to OLA in April for the Lampman breakfast where we honor the one among us deserving of this award.

From Idea to Publication Part One: Understanding the Research Question

February 7, 2012-Learn to formulate and define good research questions, select appropriate research methodologies and design the research study. Specific topics will include developing useful questionnaires, techniques used in conducting telephone interviews, working with focus groups and constructing surveys to get the information you need.

Participants gather at a host library for each webinar – these sessions are open to EVERYONE (members and non-members alike) and are intended to encourage group discussion and networking. Online access to the session URL will be emailed to ACRL-Oregon and ACRL-Washington members after each webinar.

February 1, 2012 (Vol. 18, No. 3) – Opportunities for Engagement

Sign Petition in Support of School Libraries
AASL President Carl Harvey has established an online petition seeking access for all children to effective school library programs. The petition asks that the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provide dedicated funding to help support effective school library programs. Such action will ensure more students have access to the resources and toolsthat constitute a 21st century learning environment. Reductions in school library programs are creating an ʻaccess gapʼ between schools in wealthier communities versus those where there are high levels of poverty. All students should have an equal opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to learn, to participate, and to compete in todayʼs world.

Medical Library Association Annual Conference Seeks Volunteers
The Medical Library Association (MLA) holds its next annual conference in Seattle, May 18th – 23rd, 2012. Attend presentations, hear from experts, see the latest products and network with over 2000 librarians. Conferences require many hands, and MLA members and non-members are being recruited for volunteer opportunities noted below. Shifts vary from 2-4 hours, between
7 am and 7 pm.

Not an MLA member? Have you dreamed of attending MLA but couldnʼt stretch your budget? This is your opportunity! In return for every four hours of service, volunteers receive a one-day pass! Multiple days can be earned for multiple shifts. MLA members are not eligible for passes, but karma points are plentiful.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Hospitality Information Booth: Exercise your customer service skills! Answer questions about the conference, including schedule changes, provide information about conference and emergency services, transportation, restaurants, and other Seattle-related fun facts.

Prepare Annual Meeting Bags: This fun, one-time event will be, Thursday, May 17th, 2012 (midday). Rock out in your comfy shoes while you interact with other volunteers. Lunch provided.

Placement Center and Member Resource Room: Meet and greet in a quiet environment while you monitor computers, equipment and other resources available for members. If business is slow, you may even have time to sneak in a little reading….
